Socials

Welcome to our Socials page where you’ll find out about our upcoming day trips, nights out and adventure activities around Nottingham and Derby. We aim to fill the calendar with varied and fun events so if you want an event adding or have any ideas, please email the Social Coordinator.

Regular pub meets are held once a month in either Derby, Nottingham or Beeston. These are great fun whether you’re new or have been with the group for years. Share stories of walks, have a drink and catch up with friends.

Group meals are held regularly in Derby and Nottingham. We try to vary the choice (and cost) of cuisine on offer so keep checking back and see if there are any meals you fancy. If you’d like to see your favourite restaurant on there, tell us about it!

One off events are always welcomed. Fancy horse-riding, ice skating, Go Ape? If you want it, just tell us and we’ll make it happen.

See you in the pub soon!

  • Sun 9 Nov 2025 - Social nature walk: Rutting Red Deer on the Eastern Moors

8:15 AM, Curbar Gap car park

A gentle stroll of around 3 hours taking in White Edge, Big Moor and returning along the stunning Curbar Edge, with a guide from Derbyshire Natural Tours.

Meet at Curbar Gap car park at 8.15am (for a prompt 8.30am start). Car park is pay and display but is free for RSPB or NT members.

We’ll be looking for Red Deer which use the area for their autumn rutting grounds (September to November). Although the rut will be coming to an end there should still be plenty of Deer about and with a bit of luck we’ll find one or two big Stags still trying their luck and filling the moors with the atmospheric bellowing.

We’ll keep our eyes open for winter visitors of the feathered kind too, with November a great month to spot skeins of Pink Footed Geese heading over as well as flocks of Redwing and Fieldfare gathering to feed on the Rowans below Curbar Edge. Peregrine, Kestrel and Raven are all possible and previous autumn walks here have even logged Merlin, Barn Owl, Woodcock and Wheatear.

Walking is mostly on established paths, but they can be wet and muddy, so walking boots are essential. It can be cold and windy on the moors so please dress accordingly. There are no toilet or cafe facilities so please bring any drinks/snacks you may need. Poor visibility, high winds or heavy rain may lead to postponement or cancellation.

Number is capped at 12 places, so you will need to book your place by emailing socials@ndwg.org.uk. There is a cost of £10 per person, payable by cash on the day.
