Public Transport Information

Some walks listed in the programme are marked as being accessible by public transport. The following links may help you identify suitable transport services. Be sure to check timetables closer to the walk date.

Fares

Local bus fares in England are currently capped at £3 per journey until the end of 2025. However, this does not apply to the Red Arrow or the Peak Sightseer, which are more expensive.

Reduced price day tickets are available for some routes, including:

On East Midlands Railway services, if you’re a group of 3 to 9 adults, you get 34% off the cost using a GroupSave ticket. This applies on trains towards Worksop, Matlock and Grantham. It would not be valid on CrossCountry Trains services from Nottingham to Derby, except for the Matlock-Derby-Nottingham route.

Useful bus routes

  • The Transpeak runs from Derby to Belper, Matlock, Bakewell and Buxton, mainly via the A6. It forms an easy connection with trains to Matlock.
  • The Red Arrow provides a frequent connecting bus service between Nottingham Victoria Centre, Nottingham Queen’s Medical Centre and Derby bus station.
  • The Swift runs from Derby to Ashbourne.
  • The Sixes is a family of routes connecting Derby to Wirksworth and Bakewell, with varying numbers of stops.
  • The 2 and 2A run from Derby to Melbourne and Ticknall.

Notes

For travel from Nottingham to Derby, especially if connecting with another bus, the Red Arrow will usually be more useful than the train, as Derby train and bus stations are not close together.

If travelling from Derby to Nottingham, be aware that Victoria bus station is about a twenty minute walk from the train station and the Broadmarsh bus station.
