Weekend Walking Holidays

Join us to explore the British Isles on a weekend away.

Our weekend walking holidays are very popular and book up quickly. You must be a member of the Ramblers to book onto a weekend holiday.

The best way to pay is by bank transfer. Ask the weekend organiser if you are interested for full details.

The Nottingham & Derby Walking Group is a not for profit organisation and it is run by volunteers. The weekend holidays are extremely good value and we do not make a profit on them.

  • Fri 10 Oct 2025 - Sun 12 Oct 2025: Elterwater, Lake District

    Elterwater Independent Hostel

    • Price: £75 standard / £85 en-suite
    • Places: 14

    • Led by: Andrew Cowell

We have 14 places booked at the independent hostel at Elterwater close to the lake of Elter Water in the Great Langdale Valley, not far from Ambleside. This weekend is conveniently located for all the best walking, whether hard (mountains) or easy (lakeside walks), together with several good pubs! The last chance to get away with NDWG before winter draws in and see the Lake District in all its autumn colours, you would be mad to miss it!

We will be opening this weekend at 19:30 this Thursday 7th August at The Victoria pub meet in Beeston. The price is £75 for a standard room or £85 in the 4 bed en-suite room. If you can’t make the pub meet please email weekends@ndwg.org.uk and we will put you on the waiting list if spaces are available.

  • Tue 9 Jun 2026 - Tue 16 Jun 2026: The Isles of Scilly

    Chy Carn, St Mary's Island

    • Price: To be confirmed, around £310 per person plus transport
    • Places: 10
    • Booking opens: Derwent Valley pub social at the Hollybush Inn, Thursday 4th September 2025
    • Led by: Joanne Morris

This week long trip will open at the pub social on September 4th at The Holly Bush in Makeney. To be in with a chance of bagging one of the first 10 places, you will need to be there in person when booking opens at 19:30. If you can’t make the pub, you can take your chances and go on the reserve list, which you can request to go on from today. This will then be used to fill any remaining spaces.

You need to be a Ramblers member and pay by BACS within 72 hours of sign up. Travel will be payable by the 4th October, as we want to book this by the 7th, and it stretches to another pay day, which seems fair to all. This cost will be finalised a few days after the sign up, when we have travel preferences. It would be best to all arrive together, so sailing would be the easiest option for this. Leaving on the 16th, could be any of the 3 options… sailing, flying by plane or by helicopter.

On our dates of travel, the costs of flexible tickets with luggage are:

    • £183 to sail both ways. (20kg)
    • £320 to fly by aeroplane. (15kg)
    • £251.50 to sail one way and fly the other. (15kg)
    • £359 by helicopter. (20kg)

There is parking near Penzance or at Lands End car park. Equally, there’s the sleeper train from London, which arrives to coincide with boarding for the ferry. Parking is approximately £45. I can give more details when required. If driving, you will need to stay near Penzance the night before travel. If sailing back, you will also need overnight accommodation, as the ferry doesn’t dock until around 7pm. Trust me, you would not want to drive directly home. I’ve done it and it’s not pretty.

Accommodation is at Chy Carn, on St Mary’s, a house that sleeps 10 people, in shared twin/double beds. The cost will be around £310 per person, but will depend on whether we fill the double bed quota (currently two, but working on it being one, as it was when I stayed there 8 years ago). This is a very good price for the islands.

All bedrooms are ensuite, except for one, but that does have a private bathroom next door.
